102-Year-Old Japanese Man Becomes Oldest to Climb Mount Fuji.

Kokichi Akuzawa’s record-breaking ascent certified by Guinness World Records

A 102-year-old Japanese man, Kokichi Akuzawa, has officially been recognised as the oldest person to climb Mount Fuji, Japan’s tallest and most iconic mountain. Despite battling serious health challenges earlier this year, Akuzawa’s achievement has been certified by Guinness World Records.

A Lifetime of Hiking

Born in 1923, Akuzawa has spent decades committed to an active lifestyle, often climbing mountains nearly every week. He previously scaled Mount Fuji at the age of 96, making this latest climb six years later another remarkable milestone in his lifelong passion for hiking.

Overcoming Health Challenges

Akuzawa’s journey to the summit was far from easy. In January, he tripped while hiking near his home, later contracted shingles, and was even hospitalised with heart failure. His doctors were astonished by his quick recovery. Determined not to give up, he resumed his early morning walks and weekly mountain hikes to rebuild his strength before attempting the climb.

A Three-Day Ascent

The climb up Mount Fuji was spread over three days, with two nights spent in huts along the way. At times, Akuzawa considered giving up due to the thin air at high altitude, but he persevered with encouragement from his companions, including his granddaughter, a nurse.

Humble in Victory

Despite the record-breaking feat, Akuzawa modestly downplayed the achievement. “I have been there and seen the view many times. It wasn’t anything special,” he told AFP. “I reached the summit last time, too.”

A Full and Active Life

Outside mountaineering, Akuzawa remains active as a volunteer at an elderly care centre and teaches painting. A retired livestock farmer, he continues to inspire younger generations with his energy, humility, and determination.

When asked if he would attempt Mount Fuji again, Akuzawa responded firmly: “No.” For him, the climb was less about setting records and more about living life with perseverance and grace.
