When the Copy Rights Commission and the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria appeared before it in Abuja, Olumide Osoba, the chairman of the House Committee on Justice, said this.

The presentation was a participatory discussion of the late singer's music royalties and rights.

In order to secure the royalties for Mohbad's music and lyrics, Babajimi Benson (APC-Lagos) had moved a resolution of urgent public interest.

Recognising that royalties and payments for compensation were crucial sources of income for musicians, Mr. Osoba highlighted the need of securing these payments.

According to him, doing so would allow musicians to maintain their careers, produce new music, and secure their futures in the business.

But according to him, the current system frequently falls short in terms of providing for and protecting young musicians' royalties rights.

In particular when working with major record labels, he claimed that many up-and-coming artists have difficulty negotiating fair royalty deals.

This, he claimed, frequently exerts considerable authority and may impose unfavourable conditions, resulting in artists only obtaining a portion of the royalties they are due.

The importance of acknowledging that young musicians frequently lack knowledge of their rights while signing contracts was stressed by the speaker.

He claimed that because of their lack of expertise, they were at a disadvantage because they did not fully understand the intricate legal nuances involving royalty rights.

He asserted that it was the duty of society to close this gap, guarantee that aspiring musicians are aware of their rights, and provide them with access to legal defence to safeguard their interests.

He claimed that the committee had made pertinent inquiries on Mohbad's demise's circumstances and the procedures in place to protect his royalties and other benefits.

He stated that they needed to move quickly on this task because the deadline is next week.

The committee, he added, is also open to receiving any further details or issues impeding the fulfilment of musicians' rights and royalties.

You may remember that Mohbad went away on September 12 in an unexplained manner.
