After the annual Mister and Miss Morgan State pageant, which takes place at the historically Black college in Baltimore, Maryland, around this time, the shootings began in the evening.

According to Baltimore PD, as attendees of the event were leaving an auditorium at the Murphy Arts Centre to proceed to a coronation ball in an adjacent building, officers were monitoring the area when they suddenly heard a burst of gunfire.

Police issued a warning that there was an active shooter situation near the arts centre and one of the dormitories and ordered everyone to take cover.

When police arrived on the scene a short while later, they discovered the five shooting victims, who ranged in age from 18 to 22.

Four of the casualties were students, and they were taken urgently to a nearby hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening wounds.

Police officials warned that there may be more than one attacker still on the run as a SWAT team hunted for the shooter in vain.

By early Wednesday morning, police had withdrawn the order for shelter in place after determining that there was no longer an active gunman on campus.
