According to the Summit County Prosecutor's Office, Sydney Powell of Akron, Ohio, USA, was found guilty of killing Brenda Powell, 50, a healthcare worker, as well as feloniously assaulting and tampering with evidence.

The office stated in a press that Powell stabbed Brenda Powell almost 30 times in the neck in March 2020 after striking her in the head with an iron skillet.

After a jury convicted Powell guilty on Wednesday, September 20, the former Mount Union University student sobbed in the Summit County Common Pleas courthouse, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

On March 3, 2020, police discovered Brenda inside her house suffering from serious wounds. She was brought to a hospital together with her 19-year-old daughter, where Brenda passed away.

Sydney Powell could be sentenced to a maximum of life in prison with a 15-year parole possibility.

Powell allegedly attacked her mother, a child life specialist at Akron Children's Hospital, while she was speaking on the phone with representatives from her school, according to the Summit County Sheriff's Office.

The defence claimed Sydney had schizophrenia during the trial and could not be held responsible for the killing.

Sydney killed her mother, whom she had thought of as her best friend, after experiencing a psychotic break, according to James Reardon, one of three defence experts who provided the diagnosis.

The diagnosis was disputed by Sylvia O'Bradovich, a psychologist who was recruited by the prosecution, who claimed Sydney did not fit the criteria for insanity at the time of the crime.

O'Bradovich acknowledged that Sydney has mental health problems, such as anxiety disorders, borderline personality features, and malingering.

According to the outlet, Betsy Brown, Sydney's maternal grandmother, and Steven Powell, Brenda's husband and Sydney's father, had pleaded with the prosecution to resolve the case without a trial.

However, the prosecution claimed it preferred a jury's verdict.

Assistant prosecutor Brian Stano stated, "Sydney stopped attacking with the pan and probably went to the kitchen with a knife."

"She had to switch weapons and keep attacking her," he said, adding that Sydney committed the fatal assault because she didn't want her secret to be made public.

On September 28, Powell will be sentenced.
