Hakeem Odumosu, a retired assistant inspector general of police (AIG), has been appointed by President Bola Tinubu as the actual chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Odumosu's nomination is contingent on Senate approval.
The former anti-corruption agency chairman was placed on leave by Tinubu on Wednesday.
Bawa's suspension, according to a statement from the presidency, is "to enable for due investigation of his conduct while in office. This comes after serious allegations of office abuse made against him.
The Department of State Services (DSS) later invited Bawa for questioning.
