2023: Imo witnessing burning of INEC office and abduction of staff

Unknown individuals have been responsible for the fire that broke out at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.

Thursday saw the arsonists strike at the building that is now undergoing renovation.

According to reports from NAN, INEC's Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Imo State, Professor Sylvia Agu, has verified that the attack occurred in a statement that was issued yesterday by the National Commissioner, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye.

"The tragedy took place on Thursday, the first of December in the year 2022.

"The structure, which is undergoing substantial renovations as a result of an earlier attack, was vandalized and partially set flames," he said. "The fire only affected a portion of the building."

Okoye stated that a number of the individuals working on the site had been kidnapped but were eventually set free.

He said that the prompt response of the police officers who were stationed at the scene helped to minimize the damage.

"But for the prompt response of the Nigeria Police, which has dispatched its troops to the location, the damages may have been much more extensive."

He continued by saying, "This is one attack too many."

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concern over the recent attacks on its facilities across the country in advance of the general elections in 2023.

The Commission made the observation that such attacks have unfavorable repercussions for the preparations it is making for 2023.
