Buhari begs lecturers to return to class

The Academic Staff Union of Universities' striking members have once again been urged to return to the classroom by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The president made the request in his speech to the country on Saturday to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of Independence Day.

He pledged that, to the best of its ability given the "scarce resources," his administration will continue to meet the needs of the lecturers.

I'm using this Independence Day celebration to reaffirm my demand for the Academic Staff Union of Universities to resume teaching while guaranteeing them that I will deal with their conflicting problems within the constraints of the limited resources available, the man added.

"These difficulties have been persisting for more than 11 years," this administration has "made substantial progress."

In light of the fact that education is a key factor in determining economic growth, the federal government will continue to mobilize resources on a national and international level to fund education in order to ensure that our citizens are well educated and secure in a variety of professions.

The fact that university professors in Nigeria have been on strike since February 14 due to unresolved issues with the Federal Government is no longer news.
