Abia Record 21 Deaths As Flood Ravages Communities

According to the Abia State Government, flooding in villages all throughout the state claimed the lives of 21 individuals.

Sunday Jackson, the State Emergency Management Agency's executive secretary, verified the number on Friday.

Jackson spoke as the National Emergency Management Agency distributed supplies to some victims (NEMA).

The official remembered that Abia was one of the 32 states the Nigeria Hydrological Services had forecast would experience flooding.

According to the SEMA chief, flooding was reported in 16 out of the state's 17 local government units.

Ifeanyi Nnaji, the head of the Owerri Operations Office, expressed sympathy to Abia on behalf of NEMA Director-General Mustapha Ahmed.

Ahmed added that 233 LGAs in 32 states, including the FCT, were expected to be located in highly risk zones according to the 2022 Flood Outlook.

There were 212 LGAs in 35 states of the federation that were near areas with a moderate likelihood of flooding.
