CISLAC urges that governors' security votes be abolished.

Security votes should be eliminated, according to the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center (CISLAC).

In the alternative, it was stated that a framework for allocating resources should be provided.

The 36 governors of Nigeria each get a monthly stipend known as a "security vote" to pay for security services within their respective States.

The payment was typically not accounted for, according to Auwal Rafsanjani, Executive Director of CISLAC, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

After releasing the "Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 Shadow Report, 2022," Rafsanjani addressed the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The activist pointed out that the money was primarily used for personal gain rather than for what it was intended for.

"It should be discarded because the funds haven't been audited or accounted for. Without having to account for our spending, we cannot spend billions of Naira.

Security vote needs to be revoked. If not, there must be a structure for using the security vote that is taken into account, he said.

According to the SDG study, the security situation is only becoming worse despite spending $670 million on security votes annually.

It stated that 5,067 Nigerians perished in 2021 as a result of insecurity, or 14 on average each day.

Rafsanjani asserted that the constitution is explicit on the subject of public officials obtaining assets overseas and noted that the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) has the authority to look into and prosecute such cases.

Former Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) Chairman Kayode Fayemi provided a hint earlier in the year about how governors spend the contentious security vote.
