Yaba College of Technology, which was Nigeria's first postsecondary institution, pushes for university status.

The renowned Lagos State Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has requested to be recognised as a university.

The federal polytechnic, Nigeria's first school of higher learning, was established in 1947.

The university possesses the requirements, including the infrastructure, for an update, according to Joe Ejiofor, the deputy registrar.

More than 150 PhDs have been awarded, he revealed, and more academics are pursuing PhD degrees.

"YABATECH is fully capable of competing with any university in Nigeria. Therefore, YABATECH can always fit in if the government decides otherwise, he told NAN.

Ejiofor highlighted studios, equipment, and manpower as some of the resources that can compete with those of institutions.

The official further stated that the school grants National Diplomas and Higher National Diplomas and is governed by the National Board for Technical Education.
