Serena Williams was named to the US Open entry list on Wednesday, joining fellow former champion Novak Djokovic, who will be unable to compete owing to his refusal to be vaccinated against Covid-19.
Williams, who competed for the first time in a year last month, was added to the entry list for the 29 August-11 September Grand Slam in New York after being named in the draw for tune-up events in Toronto and Cincinnati.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion lost in the first round at Wimbledon and last competed in the US Open in 2020, reaching the semifinals.
