On Saturday evening, 50 members of the GSM Communication Union's Zamfara State chapter were kidnapped by bandits between the states of Sokoto and Zamfara.
Alhaji Kabiru Garba Mukhtar, the State Chairman of the Union, told reporters at the Press Center in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, that their members were attacked by bandits after their vehicle developed a problem, forcing them to park along the road.
The chairman explained that 20 of the 50 kidnapped victims were fortunate enough to escape the bandits, while the remaining 30 were still held captive.
He claimed that the bandits called them from one of the victims' phones, informing them that 30 of their members were in their den.
Alhaji Mukhtar stated that at the time of the press conference, the bandits had not made any ransom demands, claiming that they were unaware of the condition of their members in the bandits' camps.
The union urged security agencies, state governments, and other relevant authorities to pay close attention to the issue, as the union cannot handle the teething problem alone.
"Because the kidnapped victims are mostly young people who will be tomorrow's leaders," he added, "we expect security agencies and the state government to step up their efforts to help them regain their freedom."
Remember that kidnappers have been ravaging the State in recent days, kidnapping powerful people without hesitation.
A former Permanent Commissioner of the Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission (ZSIEC) was also kidnapped along the Tsafe/Funtua road with his brother.
