Gov Obaseki unveils plans to tackle Yahoo boys in Edo

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has stated that internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as Yahoo guys, are extremely brilliant and that their thinking needs to be redirected toward something positive.

Governor Obaseki, who addressed a town hall meeting on Edo State Education Policy on Friday, stated that he does not condemn anyone involved in the criminal act, but stressed the need to investigate and unearth the root cause of the practise.

According to him, the government's approach to combating human trafficking in the state will be applied to combating cybercrime.

On Monday, the governor urged stakeholders in the state to provide him with information about the Yahoo boys' activities and stated that he would meet with the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to work out a solution.

"I am concerned," he stated. Cybercrime and the Yahoo culture are significant challenges.

"I make no judgments on those engaged. There must be a cause for the proliferation of that culture in Edo State. We must identify the underlying causes and address them, just like we did during the era of human trafficking.

"Let's see what we can do to remedy that, as these children must be extremely bright." What they do, how they gain access to other people's accounts. How do we re-direct that thinking in a more positive direction?"
