AFCON 2021:Eguavoen can keep his Super Eagles job-NFF

Augustine Eguavoen can keep his national team post on a permanent basis, according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

After Gernot Rohr was fired in December, the 56-year-old took over on an interim basis.

The Super Eagles have won all of their Group D games so far at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, putting Eguavoen on the map.

After the event, he was intended to hand control to Jose Peseiro.

However, according to ESPN, the NFF is reconsidering its position.

"Unless he doesn't want the position," an NFF insider added, "we'll have to leave him there."

Eguavoen is now the NFF Technical Director, but the football house would allow him to combine the two positions.

"Right now, we're debating whether or not to grant Eguavoen the two roles." He can continue to fulfil his other responsibilities during the times when the national team is not playing. The national team plays about 10 matches per year.

"Coaching is a hit-or-miss proposition. He currently holds the position of Technical Director, for which he is paid by FIFA. It would be quite risky to leave that to become a coach, when things could change at any time and he could be dismissed.

"That's why we'd like him to keep both jobs." So, whatever happens, he has demonstrated that he can excel in both, and if anything goes wrong with the coaching, he can return to just being the technical director," the official noted.
