There have been confirmed occurrences of the Omicron variant in Nigeria by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

There have been confirmed instances of the Omicron variant in Nigeria, according to the NCDC.

According to a statement by the agency's Director-General, Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, on Wednesday morning.

Omicron was given this designation by the WHO Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution last Friday, November 26, 2021. (TAG-VE).

The advisory group's conclusion was based on information that Omicron contains various alterations that may affect its behavior, such as "how quickly it spreads or the severity of sickness it produces."

Travelers to South Africa, Botswana, Italy, Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom had been advised by the NCDC to stay away from nations where cases had been documented.

However, Canada has reported finding two cases of Omicron in two Nigerian travellers.

The National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCDC) announced on Wednesday that it has found two instances of the Omicron strain connected to South African passengers.

the Nigerian Center for Disease Control's National Reference Laboratory in Abuja has confirmed that this is Nigeria's first case of the Omicron strain in line with the standard travel testing required for all overseas travelers. Two cases of the Omicron strain were found among South African travelers who landed in Nigeria last week after testing positive on day two of standard screening for those traveling to Nigeria.

Travelers to Nigeria who had previously been diagnosed with the Omicron variant were also found in samples obtained in October 2021."

While the two passengers had not yet displayed any symptoms, the NCDC said it had began contact tracing anyhow (of a condition or a person producing or showing no symptoms).
