A Nigerian court has fined Kanu Nwankwo, the owner of a hotel, and his associates for delaying the trial of an alleged N924 million debt.

Kanu Nwankwo, a former Super Eagles captain, and his hotel, Hardley Apartment, have been fined N30,000 by the Lagos Federal High Court.

According to Daily Post, the Federal High Court presided over by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke ordered Kanu and his hotel, Hardley Apartment, to pay the money on Friday.

They were punished for delaying the scheduled hearing of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria's (AMCON) debt collection litigation against them.

As previously reported, AMCON brought the former Arsenal star, his hotel, and its directors, Ayoola Gam-Ikon, before the court for an alleged N924.7 million debt.

However, at Friday's hearing, T. A Idelegbagbon, Kanu and Hardley Apartment's attorney, informed the court that she is withdrawing all previous motions filed in response to the suit in 2017.

However, AMCON's lawyer, Jayes Ujah, opposed to the request and requested that the respondents be fined for submitting frivolous petitions.he stated that he had already filed his response to the withdrawn processes.

Additionally, Ujah requested that the court dismiss any new procedures filed by Kanu and the Hardley Apartment team on the grounds that they contained previously confessed facts.

And after hearing both parties' submissions, the judge granted the respondents' request to drop the applications and also slapped them with a N30,000 punishment for stalling further hearing in the matter.

Kanu and Hardley Apartment shall pay the money before the matter resumes for hearing on January 20, 2022, according to Justice Aneke.

AMCON sued Hardley Apartment, its directors, Gam-Ikon, and Kanu in 2015 to recover an alleged debt owing to a bank.

According to an affidavit filed in support of the claim and sworn to by a Credit Officer, Victor Igabor, AMCON gave Hardley Apartments a loan of N520,457,000 between May 2008 and January 2011.
