Minister of Defense explains why bandits have not been designated as terrorists.

Magashi, Maj. Gen. Bashir, is the Minister of Defense (retd.)

When asked about the delay in classifying bandits to be terrorists, Minister of Defense Maj. Gen. Bashir Magashi (retired) stated that it was due to the necessity of following the proper procedures.

Magashi, who made the statement on Friday in Maiduguri while fielding questions from reporters, went on to say that there was a system that needed to be followed before such a declaration could be made, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

"We are not calling them terrorists because there is a system in place for doing so," he explained further. They will be classed as terrorists if the protocol is followed to the letter. "We are currently awaiting the completion of the process."

While in Maiduguri with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, and other Service Chiefs on an evaluation visit of the battle against insurgency in the North-East, the minister voiced his pleasure with the gains made so far in the war against insurgency in the region.

He stated that his team had met with the Theatre Commander and other component commanders to debate on the next phase of operations, and that the meeting had also uncovered weaknesses that needed to be addressed immediately in order to improve the overall operations.
