BREAKING: FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DENY BANNING NIGERIANS FROM USING TWITTER

The federal government has told the Federal High Court in Lagos that it has not stopped Nigeria from using the social media platform, Twitter, adding that many Nigerians still use it every day.

The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar At night, and the federal government said this in the counterattack they rolled in response to the movement of the origin of the human rights lawyer, thisbehe Effiong, which was obtained with a punch on Thursday.

The government has on June 4, 2021, suspended Twitter almost two days after the social media platform deleted a tweet by the President, General General Muhammadu Buhari (RPD).

However, many Nigerians have by-passed Twitter suspension by using virtual personal networks.

Lawyer, Effiong, then sued  the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, and the federal government for suspending the social media platform.

In the basic human rights setting marked FHC / L / CS / 542/2021, Effiong is looking for nine reliefs, including the command of the eternal command holding respondents from further suspension, deactivating or prohibiting Twitter operations or other social media services in Nigeria because of that action violates its rights.

Effiong asked the court to declare as an illegal threat of criminal prosecution by  Lai Mohammed against Nigerians who were 'violating' suspensions or twitter prohibitions, despite the absence of written law.

In a written statement that was favored by Mr. Ilop Lawrence on behalf of the Federal and AGF government, it was stated that Twitter's suspension was not abuse of human rights because Nigerians still used Twitter regardless of suspension.

The government told the court that Nigerians were still free to use other platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Tiktok and others.

The federal government also denied knowledge of Twitter removing Tweet Buhari in Bafra civilians who offended many Nigerians.

He said Twitter made the platform accessible by elements such as Nnamdi  Kanu, the leader of the Biafra indigenous community; And it has supported the protest #UKAls from October 2020 which was later hijacked by criminals.

The government further states that Nigerians must direct their anger on Twitter and not the government because Twitter will not be suspended if obeying Nigerian laws.
